As its title implies, "Exploration" explores several of the many possible timbres available to a flutist. This was its initial goal. However, as "Exploration" developed, Ashlee set about blurring the lines between the capability of the performer and the capability of electronics to reinterpret the performer. Many extended flute techniques can sound quite synthesized. "Exploration" encourages the audience to question where exactly a sound is comes from at any given moment—whether from the acoustic performer or the choices of the electronic performer. "Exploration" may also be performed as a purely acoustic solo flute piece.
