"The Souls of Ancient Bells" is conceived as a concerto for carillon and orchestra, inspired by the Beaumont Tower carillon at MSU. A slow prologue introduces two themes: an ascending motive evoking the height and grandeur of bell towers, and a “chorale” of iterations of “tolling” figures reminiscent of Westminster quarters. The two themes develop amid a frenzied texture, building to an ecstatic climax. The title is from a poem by Kenneth Patchen called "Be Music, Night."
